Quality show Dutch, Havana, and Californian Rabbits

Californians/

Californian Meat Pens

We no longer have Cinnamons for meat pens, our friends Jeff and Stacie Snider do breed Cinnamons and you can contact them from the link on our website.

If you are showing in  January shows please give us call now, to reserve for those shows. If you wait until week of tag in we usually don't have any   Usually we have a network of breeders with very good quality stock willing to help out and find meat pens for 4-Her's and FFAer's if you call ahead of time!  Pens are $125 each (4 five week old rabbits) with additional rabbits $25 if we have available. If you want a pen of 5 that would cost $150. Call 940-648-1558 if you want to reserve a pen.

Meat Pens for the 4H Extravaganza are $80 for a pen of 4, the low cost is because exhibitors cannot auction off there meat pens. This show is purely for trophies and showing quality breeding stock.

A Meat Pen is a pen of 3 rabbits that are judged on uniformity of the trio, this means they need to be alike in weight, flesh, bone structure, fur and type. Here is an example of a uniform pen.. Trevor raised and showed the Grand Champion pen of Denton County Youth Fair 2010,  (The Reserve Grand Champion also came from his breed stock.) The one in the middle on the top view was a little squashed between the other two, but it has the roundness like the other two. The Dark points are "icing on the cake" as these make the rabbits very flashy to the judge..

Meat Pen Show Results for 2009:

2009 Denton County Show there were 60 pen entered with Judge Frank Farrow behing the table.  Rockin W Rabbitry bred the Reserve Grand Champions, 3rd place pen (which was Trevor's), 5th place pen, 7th, 8th and 9th place pens (9th place was also Trevor's).  Because you can only show one pen in the auction, Trevor dropped out his 9th placed pen and let other exhibitors move up so they had a shot at the auction.

We have done quite well raising Californians. Again we don't have many Cals, but we have nice quality in the ones we do have in the barn.  .

2009 we sold 8 pens of Cals and 1 pen of Cinnamons to counties that show in January.  3 Pens went Grand Champion and 1 Reserve. One Fryer won Grand Champion and one took Reserve. The pen of Cinnamons placed 1st as did the seperate fryer!

                 Trevor's 3rd place Meat Pen

We raise Cals for our county show and Houston Livestock Show. We breed all we have and sell the extras. We do this because the money we make off the extra meat pens pays for our entries in the Houston Show as well as supplies we need for the next year, any left over goes in the bank for college.  2008 at Houston we did not make the top 30 but did make 2 cuts. Randy Shoemaker, President of ARBA, had some nice things to say about our Cals and  Cinnamons and that was cool. Our Showmanship Team did place 2nd out of 31 teams and that was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the County show in Denton, their were 32 pens and judge Mikey Franke placed the top 12 pens..we bred the Grand Champion, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th and 12th.places. Travis placed 4th with his Cinnamons and Trevor placed 7th with his Cals. So that makes 3 years in a row the Watson boys have bred the Grand Champs!

In 2007, we bred 2 does but only one took. We had 7 babies. So Travis got 3 and Trevor got 4. Well one of Trevor's died when it was 6 weeks old so all they had to work with was 3 each. Fair day came on March 30th with Judge Tony Bell as the market pen judge. When it got down to the two last pens he said that his first place pen was the pen to beat the first time he laid his hands on it! It was Trevor's pen!!!!  Trevor was thrilled. He got in the auction and the North Texas State Fair Board bought his rabbits . Thank you NTSF and Judge Tony Bell !!!!

Travis' pen didn't make the sale but he did when belt buckles for First Place Senior Showmanship and First Place Senior Hands on Judging!
